ALDI Belgium has been represented in the home of the world’s finest chocolate since 1976. ALDI Luxembourg opened for business in 1991. Today, we focus in both countries on expanding our more sustainable product range and logistics designed to help conserve resources.
In 2017, ALDI Belgium and ALDI Luxembourg worked together to expand their product range to include a wide selection of more sustainable items, including 40 new organic products from the standard and special-buy product range. Further, ALDI Belgium became the first Belgian retailer to sell only Fairtrade bananas to mark Fairtrade Week. The company also stepped up its efforts surrounding sustainably certified fish products and published a new edition of the National Fish Purchasing Policy in July 2017. On their journey from the supplier to the shelves, all products make a stop in our distribution centres. From there, they are distributed to our various stores. In Belgium, we are dedicated to making our logistics easier on resources. Five out of seven distribution centres have now been retrofitted with energy-efficient LED lighting, with LEDs set to become the only form of lighting at our warehouses by 2019. The new distribution centre in the Belgian town of Turnhout, which will also use the latest LED lighting technology and energy-efficient cooling technology is an important cornerstone of these efforts. The distribution centre will meet the latest sustainable building standards and will receive BREEAM* certification in 2019.
